Environment - Courtauld Commitment
The Courtauld Commitment was produced at a ministerial summit in March 2005 consisting of WRAP, The British Retail Consortium and UK grocery retailers
24 retailers, brands and suppliers have joined the Courtauld Commitment since its launch in July 2005. All agreed to support WRAP in achieving its objectives.
WRAPS objectives are to :
- to design out packaging waste growth by 2008
- to deliver absolute reductions in packaging waste by March 2010
- to identify ways to tackle the problem of food waste

Retailers have outlined a range of actions they will drive forward including;
- Biopolymers and compostable packaging
- Consistency of on-pack recycling information for consumers
- Reduce food waste
Impact on our industry
- Regulations have been put in place to help Packaging users become more responsible and reduce the amount of packaging waste they produce
- Packaging (Essential Requirement) Regulation 1998
- If Retailers over package own label lines they could be prosecuted
- Producer Responsibility Obligation (Packaging & Waste) Regulation 2005
- Annual payments relative to the weight of packaging used
